The COLLECTIVE RECOMMENDS:
bastion
Developer: Supergiant Games
Genre: RPG
Platforms: Xbox 360 (platform tested), iOS, Mac, Windows, Google Chrome
Released in 2011, Bastion is an action RPG from independant developer Supergiant Games. Presented with a 2D isometric camera view it's an absolute joy to watch in motion with a hand-painted and colourful art style. This is the kind of game HD was made for with the images literally popping off the screen and beautiful environments to boot.
You play as "The Kid" a young boy who wakes up shortly after the events of "The Cataclym" which has decimated his home city of Caeledonia. With no dialogue or cutscenes per se, the games narrative is presented in the form of narration from a mysterious stranger. This device works superbly well with "The Stranger" offering commentary on everything you do in the game, from collecting shards to rebuild The Bastion to simply going nuts and destroying everything in your path.
The level design is gorgeous with a huge variety of environments that literally build themselves up around you as you move through the levels. The combat itself is a little simplistic with very little depth beyond hitting the right button to use an attack at the right time, but with a system of weapon unlocks and upgrades introduced at regular intervals it keeps the gameplay fresh for the games 3-4 hour run time.
Extra mention needs to go to the games wonderful soundtrack with the song "Build The Wall" sung by Ashley Lyn Barrett a haunting highlight.
If you've yet to play Bastion then you owe it to yourself to give it a try, I can't recommend it enough.
